Cover Image for A Journey Through Cancer: One Family's Experience

My wife was a beacon of health, maintaining a lifestyle that many would envy — a diet primarily composed of vegetables, consistent but not excessive exercise, and an inspiring influence on those around her, including myself, to adopt healthier habits. Yet, life has a way of challenging our perceptions of invincibility. Several months after her second dose of the mandated COVID-19 vaccine, she discovered a small, painless lump in her left breast. Initially thought to be benign calcification due to her young age of 36, this anomaly grew alarmingly within two months, leading to a biopsy that confirmed breast cancer — HER2-positive and progesterone receptor-positive — at a late stage 3 or early stage 4. The proposed treatment was daunting: chemotherapy, surgery, more chemotherapy, and radiation, with only a 30% chance of survival over 18 months. Despite her deteriorating health, we chose to fight. However, the cancer was relentless, and she eventually became bedridden, passing away peacefully after a long battle. This experience has taught me about health's unpredictability, the importance of vigilance, the weight of treatment choices, and navigating grief. I share this not to imply causation with the vaccine but to reflect on the profound impact of cancer on our lives.

From Guilt to Gratitude: Embracing My Wife’s Final Gift

“When your wife, in the midst of her own suffering, extends a final gift—a gesture of love or care—it can be overwhelming. The instinct is to feel guilt, to believe that you should be the one giving everything to her. You may wonder how you can possibly repay such a selfless act when she is facing something as profound as death. But her favor isn’t a transaction—it’s a reflection of the deep love she has for you. By shifting from guilt to gratitude, you begin to see her gift not as a debt to be repaid, but as a moment to be cherished. Gratitude allows you to honor her, not by trying to balance the scales, but by fully accepting her love and carrying it with you, letting it shape your heart and your actions long after she is gone.”

Enduring Dual Loss: The Solitude of Watching a Loved One Die and a Dream Unravel

Watching your wife slowly succumb to cancer is an indescribable agony. You bear witness to the erosion of someone you love, seeing her strength and vitality fade. Each day becomes a struggle between wanting to hold on to every moment and mourning the future you had once imagined together. You do everything you can—offering care, comfort, and love—but ultimately, you face the harsh reality that no matter how much you fight, you can’t change what’s happening. The helplessness is unbearable, knowing that your love and efforts can’t stop the inevitable. At the same time, the failure of the startup you helped build over nine years is its own unique devastation. Your startup is not just a job or a business—it’s an extension of yourself, your passion, and your dreams. You’ve poured your time, energy, and heart into it, sacrificing along the way, only to see it slowly unravel. The failure feels personal, a reflection of the countless hours and sacrifices that are now slipping away. It’s as if a part of your identity is crumbling alongside the company. And just like with your wife, no matter how hard you fight to save it, some forces are simply beyond your control.
